Certificate in Translation (CertTrans)

The CIOL Qualifications Level 6 Certificate in Translation (CertTrans) provides benchmark evidence of professional and practical translation skills and knowledge. The programme in CertTrans is suited to fluent bilinguals with a Mastery profiency at CEFR level C2 with a theoretical background as they acquire the high level skills necessary to practise as professional translators. Students will be underpinned by an understanding of translation theories and debates. The languages offered in this qualification are Spanish <> English.

The programme in CertTrans also offers the opportunity to acquire a translation qualification that reflects modern day work in languages and will assist those who want to use their written skills in international organisations worldwide.

Following successful completion of the qualification, students will be entitled to use the designation ‘CertTrans’ and may be eligible to apply for membership of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and the Caribbean School of Languages.

Professional Accreditation

This qualification is recognised by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), Qualifications Wales (QW) and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) at the Certified Translator level.

The mandatory core unit and one mandatory option unit must be achieved to be awarded the CIOL Qualifications Level 6 Certificate in Translation.

Unit 01: General Translation SkillsCoreThis unit focuses on written translation of a text of about 500 words. Candidates will translate the text into their target language, to a high standard of accuracy, demonstrating necessary translation skills with the aim of producing a target language text that is accurate, grammatically sound and well organised.

Unit 02: Business and Commercial Translation Skills

OptionThis unit focuses on written translation of a text of about 300 words. In this unit candidates will demonstrate an awareness of business and commercial contexts, using their translation skills to produce a text in their target language with clear evidence of comprehension and accuracy as well as being grammatically sound and well suited to the business or commercial context.
Unit 03: Government and Public Service Translation SkillsOptionThis unit focuses on written translation of a text of about 300 words. In addition to accuracy, translation of government, public service texts and public affairs documents such as official statements, policy documents, discussion papers, reports and announcements require the translator to consider the social, political and cultural context of the text. In this unit candidates will demonstrate an awareness of government and public service contexts to produce a translation with clear evidence of comprehension and accuracy as well as being grammatically sound and well organised within context.
  • There are 12 weeks per Term.
  • Successful completion of this programme is a prerequisite for admission to our CIOL Qualifications Level 7 Diploma in Translation (DipTrans) programme.
  • For all applicants: (i) An official college, university diploma or degree;    
  • For English speakers:
    • (i) DELE Diploma at C2 not more than a year old;
    • (ii) IELTS Band 8 or 9;
    • (iii) A level two (2) certificate or level (3) diploma studied in Spanish and intended for Spanish speakers in one of the following areas:
      • Technology, Business or Literature; AND
    • (iv) A level two (2) certificate or level three (3) diploma studied in Spanish and intended for Spanish speakers in one of the following areas:
      • Science, Social Science, Law, Arts and Culture.

 

  • For Spanish speakers:
    • (i) Internal DELE C2 entrance test;
    • (ii) IELTS Band 8 or 9; 
    • (iii) A level two (2) certificate or level (3) diploma studied in English and intended for English speakers in one of the following areas:
      • Technology, Business or Literature; AND
    • (iv) A level two (2) certificate or level three (3) diploma studied in English and intended for English speakers in one of the following areas:
      • Science, Social Science, Law, Arts and Culture.

 

Note: There is no placement test for admission to this programme. If you do not have the level required to be admitted to this programme at this moment, the CSL offers the following programmes to bring you up to speed.
