Course Summary

This course builds on knowledge and skills acquired in ADVBUS-II. It aims to get participants acquainted with the structure, requirements and level of external examinations leading to the award of the Advanced Certificate in Business Spanish (C1). It fosters in the learner a deeper understanding and command of topics on economics and business in Spain and Latin America. It also develops the linguistic competencies necessary to function at a high level of specialisation in the language and world of business. Interactive lectures, seminars and group discussions are designed to improve the student’s level of professionalism, knowledge and skills needed for success in this endeavour.

Syllabus

The syllabus of this course includes:

  • The study of syntactical and lexical structures at the superior level (C1/C2);
  • Various styles of writing in business, such as circulars, telegrams, advertisements, etc.;
  • Public relations and advertising: market analysis, etc.;
  • Telematics;
  • Commercial documents: invoices, cheques, etc.;
  • An analysis of the socio-economic realities of Spain and Latin America;
  • An analysis of legal aspects of interest in the life of a company

Independent Study and Scheduled Teaching Activity

Interactive lectures, oral presentations, debates and discussions will allow for the deeper learning and expansion of the various topics outlined in the syllabus. Participants will also develop the various learning skills through exercises performed individually, in pairs and in groups. The teaching/facilitating process will focus on improving highly specialised skills such as telephone communication for banking transactions, the preparation of correspondence, hiring personnel, business management, publicity; searching, asking for and giving information and data on a professional topic, writing, preparing and replying to commercial correspondence, writing advertisements to offer employment, summarising meetings and reports, translating various types of commercial documents and socio-economic texts, and using audio-visual support material effectively. Individual assignments, projects and extensive readings will aim at broadening the specialised knowledge of participants in all the areas listed in the syllabus.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Function using a level of linguistic competence in Spanish in the area of business both orally and in writing;
  2. Understand and prepare oral and written messages in almost any register within the area of business;
  3. Use the Spanish language freely, fluently and efficiently in the area of business;
  4. Prepare written text in the professional area coherently and without major errors, and be able to summarise it;
  5. Summarise in a few words orally the contents of specialised text, without the use of notes or any other support material. This will be done fluently and coherently ;
  6. Switch from and to formal and informal register and talk about any topic that does not require specialisation;
  7. Read and understand a specialised text, summarise it and express an opinion about it;
  8. Write a commercial or administrative text and a concise professional text;
  9. Translate specialised articles of a social and economic nature.

Assessment Strategy

Summative assessment is divided into coursework and examinations. Coursework is weighted at forty per cent (40%) of the total grade and comprises six (6) research projects, the findings of which will be presented to the class in the foreign language and a synopsis submitted and shared with the class, as well as eight (8) assignments to be submitted to the lecturer. The tutor will provide feedback for all coursework. The examination is weighted at sixty per cent (60%) and comprises one Examination consisting of four (4) parts:

  • Part 1. Reading comprehension.
  • Part 2. Programme-specific knowledge test.
  • Part 3. Specialised writing.
  • Part 4. Oral test.

Formative tasks will include talks, debates, seminars and other exercises of a technical and highly specialised nature.
