Course Summary
This course is the first step for students who would like to embark in a career in Business Spanish. This is the first of three basic Business Spanish courses that prepare participants for the external examinations leading to the award of the Basic Certificate in Business Spanish (B2). It aims to get participants acquainted with the structure, requirements and level of such external examinations. It fosters in the learner an understanding and command of topics on administration, economics and business in Spain and Latin America. It also develops the linguistic competencies necessary to function at a basic level of specialisation in the language and world of business. Interactive lectures, presentations, projects and group discussions are designed to improve the student’s level of professionalism, knowledge and skills needed for success in this endeavour.
Assessment Strategy
Summative assessment is divided into coursework and examinations. Coursework is weighted at forty per cent (40%) of the total grade and comprises six (6) research projects, the findings of which will be presented to the class in the foreign language, as well as eight (8) assignments to be submitted to the lecturer. The tutor will provide feedback for all coursework. The examination is weighted at sixty per cent (60%) and comprises one Examination consisting of four (4) parts:
- Part 1. Reading comprehension.
- Part 2. Programme-specific knowledge test.
- Part 3. Specialised writing.
- Part 4. Oral test.
Formative tasks will include talks, group projects and discussion and other exercises of a technical and specialised nature.
Prerequisite
- High School diploma and transcript with a minimum GPA of 2.00 OR
- Minimum of five (5) CSEC (CXC)/GCE O’Level subjects, inclusive of English A and mathematics, Grades 1,2,3* or A,B,C.
*Grade 3 accepted if attained in June 1998 or beyond
