Course Summary

This course is the second step for students who would like to embark in a career in the area of tourism and tourism management by becoming proficient in Spanish for Tourism. This is the second of three basic Spanish for Tourism courses that prepare participants for the external examinations leading to the award of the Basic Certificate in Business Spanish (B2). It aims to get participants acquainted with the structure, requirements and level of such external examinations. It fosters in the learner an understanding and command of topics in the world of tourism in Spain, Latin America and other regions of the world. It also develops the linguistic competencies necessary to function at a basic level of specialisation in the language and world of tourism. Interactive lectures, presentations, projects and group discussions are designed to improve the student’s level of professionalism, knowledge and skills needed for success in this endeavour.


The syllabus of this course includes:

  • The study of syntactical and lexical structures at the pre-intermediate level (B1);
  • Past experiences, habits and preferences; tourist attractions;
  • Talking about trips; variations of the Spanish language;
  • The hospitality sector;
  • Making reservations, leisure activities;
  • Gastronomy, the food and beverage sector;
  • Religious tourism; shelters, hostels, lodges;
  • Itineraries and programmes; flyers, maps;
  • Types of hotels, possible issues, furniture;
  • Marketing and tourism;
  • Surveys, telephone conversations, conferences, letters, articles;
  • Presentations at a congress, the manifest, the podcast.

Independent Study and Scheduled Teaching Activity

Interactive lectures, oral presentations, projects and discussions will allow for the learning of the various topics outlined in the syllabus. Participants will also develop the various learning skills through exercises performed individually, in pairs and in groups. The teaching/facilitating process will focus on developing specialised skills such as initiating basic communication in the world of tourism and in various language specific contexts, the production of oral discourse in basic situations within the hotel, the restaurant and the travel agency as workplaces, initiating and maintaining telephone communication, client communication, interviews, note taking; developing basic techniques for the preparation of the main administrative activities in the tourism sector, reading comprehension exercises, writing various types of correspondence and using audio-visual support, the press and authentic material to show aspects in the professional and tourism areas in Spain and in Latin America. Individual assignments, projects and extensive readings will aim at broadening the specialised knowledge of participants in all the areas listed in the syllabus.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Function using a level of linguistic competence in Spanish in the area of tourism both orally and in writing at the pre-intermediate level;
  2. Read and understand simple documents and texts related to tourism;
  3. Write correspondence at the pre-intermediate level;
  4. Express themselves orally in Spanish about everyday situations and basic situations in the area of tourism;
  5. Participate in professional communicative situations at pre-intermediate level;
  6. Interact both orally and in writing in the area of tourism at the pre-intermediate level;
  7. Ask for clarifications orally in case any difficulty arises in comprehension.

Assessment Strategy

Summative assessment is divided into coursework and examinations. Coursework is weighted at forty per cent (40%) of the total grade and comprises six (6) research projects, the findings of which will be presented to the class in the foreign language, as well as eight (8) assignments to be submitted to the lecturer. The tutor will provide feedback for all coursework. The examination is weighted at sixty per cent (60%) and comprises one Examination consisting of four (4) parts:

  • Part 1. Reading comprehension.
  • Part 2. Programme-specific knowledge test.
  • Part 3. Specialised writing.
  • Part 4. Oral test.

Formative tasks will include talks, group projects and discussion and other exercises of a technical and specialised nature.
